Overview
This 18-night journey crosses the historic heart of India — a land of Mughal tombs, Rajput forts, Chandela temples and Buddhist caves. Begin in Delhi with the Red Fort, Qutub Minar and Humayun's Tomb, then drive to Agra for the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort and the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri. Climb to the eagle-nest ramparts of Gwalior Fort — one of India's greatest fortresses — before the sculpted towers of Khajuraho's Chandela temples and the riverside palaces of Orchha on the Betwa. Continue to Bhopal for the great stupa of Sanchi, then the Afghan capital of Mandu — its Jahaz Mahal and Rupmati's Pavilion floating above the Narmada valley. When is the best time for this Central India tour?
The cool, dry months of November to February are ideal — pleasant days for the cave walks and clear skies for the Taj at sunrise. March–April is warmer but less crowded; the monsoon (June–September) makes Ajanta's trails slippery and some zones close.
Do I need a visa?
Most nationalities can apply for the India e-Tourist Visa online before travel, valid for 60 days with double entry. We'll share the application link with your booking confirmation; your passport must be valid for at least six months.
Are the caves suitable for everyone?
Mostly yes. Ellora's Kailasa Temple is at ground level with short walks; Ajanta involves a moderate walk along the gorge and steps into the caves — comfortable shoes are essential. We pace each cave visit and can arrange assistance if needed.
What should I pack?
Light layers for the winter mornings, comfortable walking shoes for the caves and forts, a hat and sunscreen for the daytime drives, and modest dress covering shoulders and knees for temples. A small torch helps inside the darker caves.
Can I skip some drives or add extensions?
Yes — the long Indore–Aurangabad drive can be replaced with a short internal flight if you prefer, and we can add Bhimbetka's rock art, the Panch Mahal at Fatehpur Sikri, or extend into the hills of Pachmarhi. Just tell us your dates and pace.
Is photography allowed at the caves?
At Ellora, photography is freely allowed. At Ajanta, phone photography is permitted in most caves but flash is banned to protect the murals; professional camera gear needs a permit. We'll brief you before each visit.
