Shimla was the summer capital of British India, and it still walks like it: a ridge-line promenade, timber-framed facades, a neo-Gothic Christ Church against deodar ridges and the broad Mall Road where evenings belong to strollers. This 03 night / 04 day short break gives the queen of hills her due, then adds the two quieter hill towns tourists usually rush past. Day one is the arrival ritual: Delhi to Kalka by private car or express train, then the famous toy train up through pine forest, stone viaducts and 800-plus tunnels of the UNESCO mountain railway to Shimla, with the evening on the Ridge and Mall. Day two belongs to the town and its lookout: the monkey-led climb or ropeway to Jakhoo Temple and its 108-foot Hanuman, the colonial Viceregal Lodge and Gaiety Theatre, and the afternoon excursion to Kufri at 2,510 metres, where the Himalayan Nature Park keeps snow leopard and monal and the ridge views stretch to the high snows. Day three crosses the valley to Chail, the hill station the Maharaja of Patiala built after being told to leave Shimla: his wood-panelled Palace among deodars, the cricket ground ringed by pines at 2,444 metres, the highest in the world, and the hilltop Kali ka Tibba with views to Choor Chandni peak, plus the lakeside stop at Sadhupul on the way down. Day four descends past Pinjore Gardens to Chandigarh or Delhi. Travel throughout is by private AC car with a hill-experienced Vedantaa chauffeur; toy train seats are booked in advance for you.

- Morning: Early transfer from Delhi to Kalka by private car or Shatabdi express, then board the heritage toy train for the 5 to 6 hour narrow-gauge climb through tunnels, deodar forest and stone viaducts (or drive up in 4.5 hours if you prefer road).
- Afternoon: Arrive Shimla and check in to your hotel near the Ridge.
- Evening: Walk the Ridge and Mall Road: Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre, Lakkar Bazaar and hot coffee as the lights come on across the valley.
- Overnight: Shimla.
- Morning: Ride or walk up to Jakhoo Temple beneath the 108-foot Hanuman statue, with panoramas over the town and snow ridges; then visit the colonial Viceregal Lodge and its botanical lawns.
- Afternoon: Excursion to Kufri (30 minutes): the Himalayan Nature Park with snow leopard, monal and Himalayan black bear, the ridge viewpoint, and optional Fun World rides and zip-line for the young at heart.
- Evening: Return to Shimla for dinner; the Mall after dark is a local pastime worth joining.

- Morning: Drive 2 hours via Kandaghat to Chail, the hill station built by the Maharaja of Patiala when Shimla barred him; check in at or near the Chail Palace, set in deodar forest.
- Midday: Visit the world's highest cricket ground at 2,444 metres, a level emerald clearing ringed by pines, and the Chail wildlife sanctuary gate for a short forest walk.
- Evening: Sunset at Kali ka Tibba, the quiet hilltop temple facing the Choor Chandni peak; dinner by the fireside at the palace.
- Overnight: Chail.
- Morning: Slow breakfast in the deodars, then drive down via Sadhupul, the streamside stop famous for its bridge-side puri-chana stalls.
- Afternoon: Visit the terraced Yadavindra (Pinjore) Gardens near the plains, then drop at Chandigarh airport or station (2.5 hours), Kalka for the train home, or drive on to Delhi (7.5 hours).
- Tour concludes: Or continue with our Chandigarh short break or the Punjab Heritage Circuit from Chandigarh.
The toy train leg can be swapped to the return direction, and a night at Mashobra or Naldehra can be added for a 5-day version. Winter travellers should carry layers: Shimla sits at 2,200 metres and snow days are part of the charm from late December to February.

- Yes, the Kalka-Shimla toy train tickets are booked for you in advance. You reach Kalka from Delhi by private car or Shatabdi express (both arranged), then ride the UNESCO railway up. If you prefer speed, the whole route can be driven, or you can fly to Chandigarh and drive up in 3.5 hours.
- Yes, for a first visit: two nights in Shimla cover the town, Jakhoo and Kufri comfortably, and one night in Chail gives you the palace, the cricket ground and the quiet without rushing. Add a night each if you want Naldehra golf, Mashobra apple orchards or a slower pace.
- Late December to February brings snowfall to Shimla and Kufri, with snow play and ski slopes (carry heavy layers and expect occasional road delays). March to June is the classic season for clear views and mild days, and October to mid-December offers crisp air and thin crowds. July to August is monsoon: green but rainy.
- Very much. The toy train is a highlight for all ages, Kufri has rides and a mini zoo, and the walking on the Mall is flat and car-free. For elders, we use the Jakhoo ropeway instead of the climb and pace the Chail day gently; all drives are short with frequent stops.
