This 8-night circular journey is the perfect first taste of Sri Lanka — the teardrop of the Indian Ocean — weaving ancient citadels, sacred temples, misty tea country, wildlife safaris and golden beaches into one seamless loop. Begin in Colombo with a city tour of its colonial landmarks, then head inland past the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where orphaned elephants are fed and bathed daily in the river. Stand before the painted Dambulla Cave Temple — a UNESCO-listed golden shrine with 157 Buddha images — and climb the breathtaking Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the 5th-century sky-citadel of King Kasyapa with its famous frescoes and lion gate. Descend into the hill capital of Kandy for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, an evening Kandyan cultural show, and a stroll through the Peradeniya Botanical Garden. Wind up into the cool highlands of Nuwara Eliya — 'Little England' — to visit a working tea factory, wander emerald tea gardens, and relax beside Gregory Lake and Victoria Park. Continue through the dramatic pass of Ella to the wild south, where a dawn jeep safari in Yala National Park seeks out leopards, elephants and sloth bears. Then it's all coastline: the Dutch ramparts and lighthouse lanes of Galle Fort, and finally Bentota, where a mangrove boat ride on the Madu River and a visit to a turtle hatchery round off your island story before the airport drop.
