About This Tour
Overview

This 21-night journey is the definitive Odisha deep-dive — a slow arc from the state's great monuments to the living tribal cultures of the Eastern Ghats. Begin in Bhubaneswar, the "Temple City", with the Lingaraj Temple from its viewing platform, the Bindu Sarovar tank, and a full heritage circuit of Mukteswara, Rajarani and Parsurameswara temples plus the Udaygiri & Khandagiri Jain caves. On day three explore the Buddhist Diamond Triangle — the stupas, monasteries and sculptures of Lalitgiri, Ratnagiri and Udaygiri, the finest Buddhist sites of Odisha. Trace Emperor Ashoka's footsteps at Dhauli (rock edicts and Peace Pagoda), then the mystical 64 Yogini Temple at Hirapur and the Khandua ikat looms of Nuapatna, overnighting in Dhenkanal — with the Sadeibarini dhokra metal-casting village and the sunset rituals of the Mahima sadhus at Joranda the next day. Return to the coast for the UNESCO Konark Sun Temple, darshan at Puri's Jagannath Temple, the pattachitra artists and Gotipua dancers of Raghurajpur, and a dawn wooden-boat bird safari at Mangalajodi on Chilika before reaching Gopalpur-on-Sea. Then comes the heart of the tour — two weeks in the Eastern Ghats timed to the great weekly tribal markets: the Kutia Kondh at Kotagarh (Tuesday), the Dongariya Kondh of the Niyamgiri hills at Chatikona (Wednesday), the Bonda and Gadaba at Onukudelli (Thursday), the vast Kunduli market of the Paraja and Mali (Friday), and the Dhuruba at Baligaon near Gupteswar (Saturday), with tribal villages, the Kotpad natural-dye weavers and the Bhatra communities along the way. The return leg visits the Ranipur-Jharial 64 Yogini Temple, the tribal belt around Balangir, Titilagarh and Sambalpur, the Sanaghagra waterfall and Khiching Temple near Keonjhar, Bhimkund's sacred pool, and a final stop at the Buddhist ruins before flying out of Bhubaneswar.

Good to Know
FAQ
1
Why is this tour timed around the tribal market days?
The weekly haats are the beating heart of the tribal circuit — Kotagarh's Kutia Kondh market falls on Tuesday, Chatikona's Dongariya Kondh on Wednesday, Onukudelli's Bonda and Gadaba on Thursday, Kunduli's Paraja and Mali on Friday, and Baligaon's Dhuruba on Saturday. This itinerary is built precisely around those days so you meet the communities in their natural gathering, not on staged visits.
2
What is the best season for this tour?
October to March is ideal — dry, comfortable days for the long Eastern Ghats drives, clear weather for Mangalajodi's wintering birds, and the tribal markets run year-round. Avoid the monsoon (June–September), when hill roads can become tricky and many tribal villages are hard to reach.
3
Do I need any special permits or visa?
An Indian tourist visa is required for most nationalities (e-visa available online). No special permits are needed for the areas on this route. Photography in tribal villages is by courtesy — we always ask first and tip respectfully; a local guide accompanies you at the markets.
4
How demanding are the drives in the Eastern Ghats?
Expect scenic but winding mountain roads with several full-day drives (Gopalpur–Baliguda, Baliguda–Rayagada, Sambalpur–Keonjhar). Distances are moderate but slow in the hills, so the itinerary is deliberately paced with easy overnights. A comfortable private A/C SUV with an experienced tribal-circuit driver is included throughout.
5
What should I pack?
Light cottons for the coast, warmer layers for the cooler ghat mornings, comfortable walking shoes for village walks, a scarf for temple visits (shoulders and knees covered), sunscreen, a hat, binoculars for birds, and small cash notes for market purchases, photography tips and offerings. A headlamp is handy for cave visits like Gupteswar.
6
Can I extend or shorten this tour?
Yes — popular extensions include a second week in the tribal belt, the Chitrakote and Amarkantak waterfalls beyond Bhawanipatna, Similipal Tiger Reserve, or extra beach days at Puri or Gopalpur. We can also compress the northern leg or swap the tribal markets if your dates don't align with the haat days. We'll tailor it to your dates and interests.
