About This Tour
Overview
This 8-night journey is an immersion into the breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural tapestry of Assam — India's northeast gateway. Beginning in Guwahati, the largest city in the Northeast, the tour travels east to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's foremost refuge for the great one-horned rhinoceros. From the grasslands of Kaziranga, the route crosses the Brahmaputra to Majuli Island — the world's largest river island and the cultural capital of Assam, home to ancient Vaishnavite monasteries (Sattras) and the Mishing tribe. The tour culminates in Jorhat, surrounded by rolling tea gardens, with a day trip to the ancient Ahom capital of Sibsagar — a landscape of towering Shiva temples, royal palaces, and Asia's oldest amphitheatre. All national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Assam are open for visitors from 1st November to 30th April, as per forest department regulations.

Arrive Guwahati
Gateway to the Northeast
- Arrive at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati — meet your guide and driver
- Transfer to hotel and check-in; freshen up
- Time permitting, visit the most important Hindu pilgrim site — Kamakhya Temple, a majestic temple of the state located on the Nilachal Hills. One of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Pithas.
- The gateway to the Northeast and the largest cosmopolitan city in the region — Guwahati extends along the south bank of the mighty Brahmaputra River
- Evening at leisure; overnight in Guwahati

Guwahati → Kaziranga National Park

- Drive to Kaziranga National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home of the world-famous one-horned rhinoceroses
- On arrival, check in at your jungle resort
- Evening jeep safari in the park — one of the last areas in eastern India undisturbed by human presence
- Inhabited by the world's largest population of one-horned rhinos, as well as tigers, elephants, panthers, bears, and thousands of birds
- Return to resort by dusk; overnight in Kaziranga

- Early morning elephant ride — the best way to behold the vigour and charm of the enchanting wildlife of the park. Glide through misty grasslands as the sun rises over the park.
- Return to resort for breakfast
- Mid-morning visit to Kaziranga Orchid Centre — home to hundreds of species of orchids and a butterfly garden
- Afternoon jeep safari in a different zone of the park for varied wildlife sightings
- Return to resort by dusk; overnight in Kaziranga

Kaziranga → Majuli Island
120 km · 2½ hrs + 1 hr ferry
- Breakfast at hotel; check-out
- Drive to Neemati Ghat to board the ferry to Majuli Island — the cultural capital of Assam and claimed to be the largest river island in the world
- Scenic ferry ride across the Brahmaputra (~1 hour)
- Arrive at Kamalabari Ghat; board your vehicle and drive to the hotel
- Later, visit Auniati Sattra — a historic Vaishnavite monastery established in the 17th century
- Visit a Mishing tribal village — the Mishing people are the second-largest tribe in Assam, known for their stilt houses and colourful textiles
- Check in at hotel; overnight in Majuli

- Visit Samuguri Sattra — famous for making masks used for religious dance and drama; the Bhakats of this Sattra are known to create beautiful masks
- Visit the pottery village — a place where the traditional form of cottage industry of the Kumar community involves making pots, generally exchanged for paddy, the staple food of the inhabitants
- Explore the local market and mustard mill — witness traditional mustard oil production, a centuries-old craft
- Interact with locals and experience the unhurried rhythm of life on the island
- Overnight in Majuli

Majuli → Jorhat
20 km · 1 hr + 1 hr ferry
- Breakfast at hotel; check-out
- Transfer to Kamalabari Ghat to board the ferry back to the mainland (Jorhat side)
- On arrival, check in at hotel in Jorhat — the gateway to Upper Assam and the state of Nagaland
- Jorhat was the last capital of the Ahom Kingdom. The entire district is surrounded by tea plantations with about 135 tea gardens.
- Evening: explore the local markets of Jorhat — known for Assam silk, handloom textiles, and traditional jewellery
- Overnight in Jorhat

Jorhat → Day Trip to Sibsagar

- Drive to Sibsagar — the ancient capital of the Ahom dynasty, which ruled Assam for nearly 600 years
- Visit Shiv Dol — built by the Ahoms, this is believed to be the tallest of all existing Hindu temples, rising 104 feet above the banks of the Sibsagar tank
- Rang Ghar — the largest and oldest amphitheatre in Asia; a remarkable two-storeyed structure with a distinctive oval shape, used by Ahom kings for cultural events and sports
- Talat Ghar — a unique palace with three storeys underground (closed for tourists) and four above ground. The ground floor had store rooms, stables and servant quarters, while the upper floors were for the royal family
- Return to Jorhat; overnight in Jorhat

Depart Jorhat
Jorhat Airport → Onward Journey
- Breakfast at hotel
- Morning at leisure — last chance to pick up Assam tea, Muga silk or handloom crafts from local markets
- Check-out and transfer to Jorhat Airport to board your flight for your onward journey
